More people are cycling than ever before, especially in Florida's beautiful weather. The Indian River County MPO and FDOT is committed to reducing crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries involving pedestrians and bicyclists. FDOT has adopted a target of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries in the state. This initiative is in line with the Complete Streets Policy and Program's Bicycle Friendly State report card.

At the October 27, 2021 MPO meeting, FDOT District Secretary Gerry O'Reilly presented FDOT's Draft Work Program for 2023-2027. The work program includes several of the MPO's long-standing transportation priorities. Highlighted projects include the widening of CR 510, construction of the new I-95/Oslo Road interchange, and replacement of the Sebastian Inlet Causeway (Highway A1A). View the Draft Work Program.
Indian River County is developing a list of bicycle and pedestrian transportation needs on county-maintained roadways. Potential projects include roadway resurfacing and/or rehabilitation, bike lanes, sidewalks, and new roadways. Such projects are potential candidates for inclusion in the County's five-year Capital Improvements Element and for grant funding assistance through the Florida Department of Transportation.
Recently, the MPO and County Public Works Department have received requests to increase the amount of public participation in the conceptual and pre-application phases of transportation projects. At the November 17 workshop, MPO and Public Works staff will review the current state of the transportation system, the MPO's Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, existing and planned projects, and hold a special public input session on any other future system needs.

The MPO is conducting a land use vision study on the future of Indian River County, which is being prepared by Kimley-Horn and Associates, one of the MPO's general planning consultants. At the June 9, 2021 MPO meeting, Willam Roll and Kelley Klepper of Kimley-Horn provided a kickoff presentation on the land use vision study. The 2045 LRTP is known as Connecting IRC 2045 and identifies a multimodal, fiscally-constrained Cost Feasible Plan to enhance the area's transportation network over the next 25 years. Connecting IRC 2045 was coordinated with local, regional, and state partners; considered stakeholder and public input; provides benefits throughout the county without disproportionate adverse impacts; and is consistent with applicable state and federal requirements. The Treasure Coast Transportation Council(TCTC) is scheduled to meet on April 21, 2021 at 10 a.m. View the agenda. The TCTC meeting will be a "hybrid" in-person/virtual meeting. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District Four, will conduct a Virtual Public Information Workshop regarding the above referenced project. The project will widen CR 510 to four lanes between CR 512 and 58th Avenue. In addition to widening the roadway, the project includes the installation of sidewalks and buffered bike lanes through the entire corridor. Construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024. The roundabout at 66th Avenue is proposed for construction as part of the CR 510 widening project at a later phase. Indian River County will host a public workshop on the resurfacing of Indian River Blvd. between the Merrill Barber Bridge and 53rd Street. As part of the resurfacing project, bike lanes will be installed on both sides of the road. The resurfacing project length is approximately three miles. The public workshop will be on April 8 at 2:00 PM in the First Floor Conference Room, County Administration Building "B" located at 1800 27th Street in Vero Beach, Florida.
